Hawks Playbook Podcast Episode 31 – Seahawks Terrific Win is Costly

Open: Hello again Seahawks fans and welcome to the show! In today’s Podcast Bill and Keith will discuss the tremendous win at home against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday night. Again, it was a tale of two half’s, where the Seahawks trailed at halftime 15-10, but exploded for 36 second half points to route the Colt’s by a final score of 46-18. In our second segment, we go into the upcoming game vs the Los Angeles Rams in LA next Sunday.

Featured Segment: Great Win Proves Very Costly

We don’t know exactly how costly just yet, but during the game, 4 key Seahawks players left the game with injuries, some rather significant. Most of which was an ankle injury to running back Chris Carson. Reports indicate that it is a break to the ankle and injury to muscles and ligaments. Chris Carson had successful surgery to repair that damage and It looks like the Seahawks will be without Carson for much of the rest of the season, or he may be done for the year. Other injuries included CB Jeremy Lane (Groin), DE Cliff Avril (Neck) and LT Rees Odhiambo (Chest).

Key Takeaways:

  • Seahawks record 36 points after half time (2nd most in franchise history) and the 46 total points is the most for Seattle since they beat the Buffalo Bills 50-17 in 2012. Seattle finished with 477 yards and allowed just 237 yards to the Colts, including only 32 yards in the 2nd half.
  • Russell Wilson finished 21-26 for 295 yards, 2TD’s and 2 Int. He ran 23 yards for a touchdown and finished the game with a 107.5 QB Rating.
  • Eddie Lacy finished with 11 carries and 52 yards. JD McKissic finished with a 30 yards TD run and a 27-yard TD reception. The Seahawks finished the game with 194 yards rushing.
  • Defense scores 2 TD’s from turnovers. Justin Coleman jumped an out route and returned the interception 28 yards for a TD and Bobby Wagner had a 21-yard fumble recovery return for a TD. 0

Featured Segment: Next game: Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams next Sunday.

One of these days, Seattle is going to have to beat a quality opponent on the road.  Will this be the week? Seattle will travel to LA and take on the new and improved Rams team and new head coach Sean McVay. McVay is the youngest head coach in league history at the age of 30. Sean was born in 1986. Let that sink in! Prior to getting hired last January, McVay was the Washington Redskins offensive coordinator.

So far, this season, LA has been a pretty big surprise. They have had some quality wins, good QB play and their defense is still in the top ½ in the league, especially there front 7 led by Aaron Donald and Co.  They beat the previously mentioned Colts in the first game 46-9 (sound familiar?), and they just finished a very impressive comeback win in Dallas on Sunday 35-30.

Players to watch for: QB Jared Goff, RB Todd Gurley, DT Aaron Donald, WR Tavon Austin, WR Sammy Watkins, DE Robert Quinn.

The Seahawks will need a complete game on the road to beat the Rams.  The defense will once again be asked to stop the run and turn the Rams into a one-dimensional team led by an unproven talent in Jared Goff. Seattle should have the right stuff to hold the Rams under their season averages in yards and points. So, the real key to this game is all about Seattle’s ability to score points against the Rams defense.  So far, this season, Seattle has been equal parts hot and cold, and that’s not a very good formula for success in the National Football League.

Can Seattle establish a running game with Chris Carson on the sidelines? Will JD McKIssic continue to capitalize on his new opportunities? Can Thomas Rawls make the mental adjustment to being featured again?  Does Mike Davis get called up from the practice squad or does Seattle shop outside the organization for another runner?
