Hawks Playbook Podcast Episode 66: First Roster Look – Linebackers and Safeties

Welcome back to the Hawks Playbook Podcast. Thanks so much for joining Bill Alvstad and Keith Myers once again for another information filled hour of great Seahawks talk! This weeks show turns its attention to the linebacker and safety position groups. Why did we decide to combine these two? Well, for starters it just worked out that way logistically. But also, there is a lot of cross over between the groups on the field by way of the scheme itself, and some of the skill sets the players themselves possess. This year the team went out in free agency, and appears to have found it’s strong side linebacker starter in Barkevious Mingo, the tall and quick 5th year pro and former 1st round talent. Of course, the linebacker group now also includes the 5th round, story of the draft player, Shaquem Griffin. Griffin has been told he will initially begin at the weak side linebacker spot, currently manned by K.J. Wright, but as Keith and I discuss, we eventually see Griffin in a Hybrid role that gives Ken Norton Jr. a chance to move Griffin all over from a standard Will backer to a pass rusher as well as a box safety and slot corner to take advantage of Griffin’s coverage ability and speed.  Fun stuff!
