Hawks Playbook Podcast Episode 28 – Loss on the Road in Green Bay

Open: Welcome once again to the Hawks Playbook Podcast. Thanks for joining your Host’s Bill Alvstad and Keith Myers for our weekly podcast that dives into all things Seahawks.  This week we opened the 2017 regular season on the road against the Green Bay Packers.  While Seattle did fall in it’s opening game on the road, there were some positives to pull away, and yes, there were a number of negatives as well, all most all of them on offense.

Our own Keith Myers became Twitter famous on Sunday by Tweeting this tweet about our offensive line.  Over 1,000 likes and 500 retweets later, Keith is still humble.  I just don’t know how the man does it. 🙂

  • The offensive Line play was the worst-case scenario given the hope during preseason that they looked like an improving group. When does Tom Cable get held accountable for the performance on the field?
  • Terrence Garvin played 30 snaps at SAM Linebacker. Bradley McDougald played 1 snap at Safety.
  • Eddy Lacey does not look like a starting running back in the NFL. Could his spot on the roster be in jeopardy by mid-season? On the other hand, Chris Carson should be the starter and get 15-20 touches a game.
  • Griffin rises to the occasion and plays 70% of defensive snaps after Lane is ejected.
  • Defensive Line group, as well as entire defense is going to have an amazing year.
  • Bonus takeaway: The call for change for assistant coaches Tom Cable and Darrell Bevel has already begun. Should the team consider a change during the season, or do we hold on and hope for improvement? The only thing the offensive line is blocking for now, is our path to the Super Bowl!

A Look Ahead: Week Two at Home vs San Francisco 49ers

Seattle has its first home game and is looking to begin its winning ways against a poorer than average 49er team.  New Head Coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch mark a new direction for the now down franchise that looks to build around a nice nucleus of young defensive talent.  But they don’t yet have enough pieces and lack of depth will mean another losing season.  It should be a perfect opportunity for a team seeking its first victory of the season to claim it this weekend.

Key Players on 49ers to look for:  QB Brian Hoyer, RB Carlos Hyde, WR Pierre Garcon’, LB Navorro Bowman, DE DeForest Buckner, DE Soloman Thomas, DT. Arik Armstead, CB Ahkello Witherspoon, LB Brock Coyle, LB Malcolm Smith

  • 49ers have lost 6 straight to the Seahawks, and have won 8 of the last 9 games. In those 6 straight loses, Seattle has beaten the 49ers by a combined score of 147-67
  • Early line has Seattle Seahawks by 13 points
  • Hoyer is not a terrible QB. With Chicago Bears last season he had 4 straight games of 300+ yards and a streak of 224 passes without an interception to end the season.
  • Hyde had a 4.6 yard per carry average, rushing for 988 yards in 13 games last season.
  • 49er offense struggled in their first game vs Carolina, generating only 13 first downs and 217 total yards in the loss.
